Work at JCC as a student
You can have an on-campus job while you attend Jamestown Community College. Hours worked per week depend on department needs and student availability. During the academic year, student workers can work up to 15 hours per week. During the summer, student workers can work up to 40 hours per week. Student workers earn the current NYS minimum wage.
Student assistant & Federal Work Study positions
At JCC, both student assistant and Federal Work Study (FWS) positions may be available. Student assistant positions are available to both domestic and international students, regardless of financial aid packages.
Federal Work Study positions are only available for domestic students who qualify for this program through their FAFSA application. If you are unsure of your FWS eligibility status, contact Financial Aid & Billing.
- Being FWS eligible does not guarantee that you will be hired.
- FWS positions can only work during the academic year and cannot work during the summer months.
- For the 2023-24 academic year, students can earn FWS funds from August 20, 2023 through May 18, 2024.
How to apply
All current on-campus openings can be found and applied to in Handshake, JCC’s career readiness platform provided to all students. To apply to open positions:
- Activate your Handshake account.
- Search for on-campus jobs.
- Complete a resume and apply by submitting your resume to each office you’re interested in.
- Interview with any offices that contact you to chat with you about their open positions.
- Accept or decline any positions offered to you.

Hiring process
- Apply and submit your resume via Handshake to the offices you're interested in working for.
- Interview with any offices that contact you.
- If a job offer is extended and you accept it, you will work with your supervisor together with Human Resources to complete new hire paperwork.
- Once all paperwork is processed, your supervisor will get an email from Human Resources approving your hire as a student worker. You will also get an email from Clear Company with the remaining new hire documents to complete (ex. tax forms). You may not start working until you have completed all employment documents, so complete and submit the forms as quickly as possible.
- You and your supervisor will work together to create a schedule of your working hours and job tasks.
- Paychecks are issued biweekly. All payroll dates, submission times, and approval deadlines are noted in Banner for each payroll period.
Student worker responsibilities
If you're hired and accept a position on campus, you are responsible for:
- Submitting your I9, background check, W4, IT-2104, and other necessary paperwork to Human Resources. You cannot begin working until you do so. Career Services can help you if you have any questions.
- Setting a start date and work schedule with your supervisor.
- Submitting your bi-weekly timesheet in Banner according to the payroll schedule.
Supervisor responsibilities
If you hire and supervise student workers for your office, you are responsible for:
- Creating and submitting a current job description to Career Services. Career Services can work with you to write and develop job descriptions and positions that will be meaningful to both your office and the student.
- Posting the job opening in Handshake each semester for which you are hiring.
- Scheduling and conducting interviews with potential candidates. Career Services can help you create questions.
- Extending employment offers and notifying Human Resources of students hired. Human Resources will then provide the student with additional instructions and paperwork that they need to fill out before they can start working.
- Determining a start date and work schedule with your student worker.
- Training your new student worker on office-specific tasks and projects. Career Services will provide general career competency training with student workers.
- Approving your student worker's bi-weekly timesheet in Banner according to the payroll approval schedule.
